The Process of Artificial Insemination (IUI)

IUI, also known as artificial insemination, is the process where a concentrated specimen of sperm is placed in the uterus.

Step One – Ovulation Triggering

The patient takes medications such as clomiphene and FSH (various brands) with the purpose to stimulate the ovary to mature an egg or multiple eggs. Ultrasounds and blood tests are performed to monitor the eggs as they mature. Once the eggs are ready, a subcutaneous injection is given of a hormone called hCG (the ‘trigger shot’), which triggers ovulation of that egg approximately 38-40 hours after the injection. An exact timeline for the artificial insemination (IUI) will be provided at this time.

Step Two – Sperm Washing

The sperm sample is prepared in the andrology laboratory. This procedure is also known as “sperm washing”. It involves placing the sperm sample in a test tube and then a centrifuge. The seminal fluid is removed and fluid (media) is placed above the sperm. The most active sperm will then swim up into the media. The final sample is selected with the most active sperm.

Step Three – Insemination

A speculum is inserted into the vagina and the cervix is visualized. A soft, thin catheter is then placed through the cervix and into the uterus. Sperm is then introduced into the uterus through this catheter. This procedure does not require anesthesia.
