Una vez que los \u00f3vulos est\u00e1n listos, se administra una inyecci\u00f3n subcut\u00e1nea de una hormona llamada hCG (el \u00abtiro desencadenante\u00bb), que desencadena la ovulaci\u00f3n de ese \u00f3vulo aproximadamente 38-40 horas despu\u00e9s de la inyecci\u00f3n. Examinar\u00e1 estas c\u00e9lulas para determinar sus cromosomas de sexo (XX para mujer o XY para hombre) o para detectar defectos gen\u00e9ticos. El PGD \u200b\u200bpuede detectar anomal\u00edas en los n\u00fameros de cromosomas, como por ejemplo el s\u00edndrome de Down. Tambi\u00e9n puede identificar otros trastornos serios de un solo gen, como la fibrosis qu\u00edstica y la anemia falciforme antes de la transferencia de embriones. Una cantidad anormal de cromosomas en el embri\u00f3n (ya sean demasiados o muy pocos) probablemente causar\u00e1 un implante fallido o un aborto espont\u00e1neo.
